- Network Engineer 3 – Legacy Services Lead
- Started at the first tier of the on-call escalation chain for Iridium’s prepaid and safety services, learning both under a mentor.
- Moved from running procedures to writing them. I plan, write, and execute my own updates and infrastructure changes.
- Lead the legacy services side of my team, providing technical direction across Iridium’s legacy circuit-switched voice and data services.
- Drive the migration of those services to SIP while maintaining interoperability with 2G technology. Two services migrated to date, with several more planned.
- Own the legacy voice switch and mentor a junior engineer on the team.
- Simplified voice call routing, which improved call quality and made faults easier to diagnose.
- Retired a costly legacy circuit-switched trunk by bringing traffic in over SIP through a SIP-to-SS7 protocol converter into the legacy voice switch. Cut the monthly recurring cost from roughly $100k to $8k.
- Migrated roughly 8,000 DIDs (direct inward dial numbers) with no customer impact, including two safety-of-life services (ATS and GMDSS).
- While on the NOC floor as a Network Control Specialist 1, built a Telegraf, Prometheus, and Grafana pipeline that collects about 40 metrics per second from the MPLS network, and wrote Python tooling for verification and maintenance procedures.
